The choice all depends on the type of holiday you want to experience. If you are visiting Naples for the first time or if you have little time, for example if you are staying on a weekend break, the best solution is the centre, the area that develops around the Spaccanapoli and the Decumani areas.

Guide to areas of Naples
Naples is a big city, divided into 10 constituencies, in turn divided into neighbourhoods, each with its own attractions. In addition to the actual centre, each area can be considered central, thanks to the places of historical, cultural and landscape interest.
In any case, there are peripheral areas of the city, which include neighbourhoods with no tourist significance and mostly residential attractions, such as Fuorigrotta, Arenella and Bagnoli, but they are still well connected to the centre by public transport. They are, however, not recommended areas to stay, as in the centre of Naples it is possible to find many solutions suitable for any type of budget.
Not recommended areas: certainly Scampia, Secondigliano, Barra, Ponticelli, San Giovanni a Teduccio, Rione Traiano and Poggioreale. In the centre, some iconic neighbourhoods such as the Rione Sanità or the Spanish Quarter can be affected by petty crime, so it is not recommended to visit them at night.
Centre / Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno
The city centre of Naples is the best area to stay, especially if you are visiting Naples for the first time, but it is not easy to spot. It develops around the Decumani area, namely San Gregorio Armeno, Spaccanapoli, Piazza del Gesù and via dei Tribunali. Here you will find attractions such as the Cloister of Santa Chiara, the Sansevero Chapel and the Cathedral of San Gennaro. We advise you to avoid the easternmost area, the one near Piazza Garibaldi and the railway station of the same name, and the area around Piazza Cavour in the evening
It is a central and quite hectic area, lively in the evening. Ideal for everyone, but especially recommended for young people. It is still a safe area, offering many types of accommodation, from simple apartments or B&Bs to the most luxurious hotels with all comforts.
Thanks to the numerous metro stops, you can reach other areas of Naples easily, quickly and comfortably. The main stops are Piazza Cavour, Museo and Dante (all L1 line).

Vomero
Elegant district of Naples located on a hill that can be reached by funicular. The main attractions of this area are, undoubtedly, the Certosa di San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo, from which you can admire a wonderful view of the whole city. It is also home to the popular Scarlatti street and Vanvitelli square, full of trendy shops and numerous clubs.
Once upon a time, it was the neighbourhood of the upper middle class, here you will find elegant streets and numerous cafes, wonderful views across the Gulf of Naples and a romantic atmosphere! Vomero is therefore suitable for families and couples or anyone who wants a quiet and romantic stay. Due to its characteristics it follows that the area is quite pricey, therefore not entirely recommended for those on a budget.

It is a youthful and lively neighbourhood, precisely due to the presence of numerous university students. There are no particular attractions but it is an excellent strategic point to get around.
This area is therefore recommended for younger people. Here you will find numerous clubs and a particularly active nightlife! We advise you to look for accommodation in the part around Corso Umberto I and Nuova Marina. It is best to avoid Stazione di Napoli Porta Nolana, especially in the evening.

The other VIP district of Naples is Posillipo, full of wealthy residences, and a spectacular view of the Gulf. It is the natural continuation of Mergellina even if, due to its elevated position, Posillipo is more panoramic. More than for museums or monuments, it is appealing precisely for the view and tranquillity.
It is therefore an ideal neighbourhood for families and those seeking tranquillity, away from the city and the nightlife. Being a very exclusive neighborhood it also has higher prices than in the centre of Naples.
It is not recommended for those on a budget, young people or those only staying for a short time because it is quite far from the centre and the main attractions. Furthermore, the whole area on the coast is not served by the metro, instead you will have to use the train station (Naples Piazza Leopardi-Naples Piazza Garibaldi direct train or metro L2, 25 min). It is more recommended for those arriving in Naples by car.
